Schooling took us on great heights, especially in our way of thinking in the modern times. It led people to think differently as compared to ancient people, who view the world in a different perspective. With this in mind, we can hypothesize that it can greatly influence our thought process when interpreting scriptures. The simple test below will reveal that most people are thinking in Greek mindset.
Describe a pencil for me.
Please stop and think for a moment before you continue reading…
Surely, most of you described the length, color and size of the pencil right?! Then it only proves that we live in an image driven culture brought by a Hellenistic worldview. We now see things physically rather than the object’s function. This is the opposite in ancient Hebrew thinking, which focuses on how an object functions and relates to their life.
Hellenistic mindset: 6 inches long yellow pencil.
Ancient Hebrew mindset: I write with it.
Upon learning this, we can now better understand why Yeshua’s appearance nor the dimensions of Noah’s Ark mattered in scriptures. With a Greek mindset, we probably are thinking if Yeshua was yellow, brown, black or white. When it comes to Noah’s ark, you might wonder on how a box would float or already being skeptical on how the ark held a multitude of animals. On the contrary, its simple function is just to hold a large quantity of creatures. No wonder there are plethora of interpretions of the bible, which then led to multiple denominations of Christianity.
In conclusion, we must avoid interpreting the bible with a Hellenistic mindset. We must deduce the gospel in accordance on how ancient Hebrews intended the scriptures to be understood.
Let’s go deeper and stop the formality!
So you think you are so good in theology right?!
You think you know the ins and out of the bible just because you memorized all the verses?
Or maybe you served a prosperous church as a pastor due to your prosperity gospel, right?!
Now let me ask you a few questions to test you:
So tell me, what does an evil eye means when the bible talks about it?
Or why Lot offered his daughters to those angry sodomite mobs?
Or maybe you can tell me the meaning of the verse above that says God stretches the heavens like a curtain?!
Even if you studied theology for decades, you still don’t know right?!
Again, we must read the scriptures with an ancient Hebrews mindset or better yet, learn ancient Hebrew and their culture, or else we are just getting burgers when we should have been eating steaks.
